Who and what determines the film styles that the AFW uses each year?

The AFW has a menu of fighting styles, special effects, stunts, locations and weapons to draw from each year. The decision on film styles we chose depends on the strengths and casting options we see in the students. “Look good while you learn” is the motto

What is the difference between the 3-day and the 2-week workshops besides the length?

The same skills are taught at all the AFW workshops. The 3 Day Workshop doesn’t produce at the same level as the 2 week Workshop.

Which films are shot on The Red One?

The RED is an ultra HD camera, which uses prime lenses so we choose the “Product” each summer that will be best served by the film production work flow that the camera demands. Specific lighting needs, steady cam and dolly, more memory card swaps, etc.

What discounts, scholarships and internship/production assistant positions does the AFW offer?

The AFW offers a few internships to technically trained students and occasionally to past AFW participants. The AFW offers discounts to Students with union affiliation (SAFD, SBFD, SAG, AFRA, DGA) and to students with special skills that will be an asset to the production needs of the workshop.

The 3-Day workshops offer a variety of training experiences. Do you have to take them in any specific order?

Yes, the Intro class is a prerequisite for the intermediates and gives everyone the skills they need to excel at the intermediates.

Do people ever come for just one of the two weeks in North Carolina?

No. It would disrupt the flow of the process not to be involved for the entire two weeks.

Occasionally the AFW brings in “ringers” or interns who have skills needed for the Western or Martial Arts projects but all students participate for the two weeks.

How many students do you accept each year?

We bring in a balanced number of Actor/ Stunt Players, Fight Arrangers & Directors so that we can create a rotation that affords the opportunity for you to work with everyone.

We cap the total number of students to maintain the quality of the experience and hold the student/teacher ratio at 3 to 1. AFW students have very little down time.

Will the 2-week AFW always be in North Carolina?

No. We have had offers to hold it at different locations around the US. We will either vary locations or expand to offer an additional 2-week workshop.

Is there a book/pamphlet that students get prior to the workshop to prepare themselves for the training?

Yes, students receive material specific to their training track as well as information shared by all. This begins the process early and has everyone arriving with an understanding of the technical process and production protocols that we use.

What are the physical skill requirements of the actor/stunt players who attend the workshop?

Actors should have previous training experience in some form of stage combat. Ideally prior work with a choreographer to evolve, rehearse and perform a fight in front of any size audience. Actors should have an understanding of their own physicals strengths and weakness. The AFW has many skilled teachers who can train actors in a variety of combat skills.

Who attends the AFW?

The AFW, is attended by actors, directors, fight arrangers, students, grads, working professionals and teachers from all over the planet. They come to sharpen skills, broaden their experience, get footage on themselves in film work that they are passionate about.

How do I get the footage of my work when the workshop is completed?

This year you will be able to leave with footage of your work. The final edited short films and trailers and action sequences go into post production and are downloadable with a password from our site.

Is the cost of housing included in the tuition?

Yes.

Do students supply their own costumes for each of the films?

Yes. Students are encouraged to supply as much wardrobe for themselves for each of the film styles chosen for that AFW. The investment in costume pieces that look authentic to style and more importantly make you look good is well worth the money and effort. We have some local costumers that we do work with but nothing found last minute will be as good, as comfortable and easy to fight in.
